On June 20th, I woke up at my local fairgrounds at 4:30 AM. After eight hours of sleep, I was ready for the long day of horses the fair had ahead of me. I was taking my aunt's horse, Lightning, for barrel racing and her other horse, Savannah for breed. I live in an enormous town, so I have absolutely no way of boarding or owning horses anywhere within ten miles of my home, so my sister drives me out to my aunt's twice a week so I can ride and train for fair.
I was a little nervous, knowing this was my first official show. I arose myself from the couch and ate a waffle. I grabbed my pink long sleeved shirt and black pants and slipped on my brown boots. I slid open the door and ran over to the horse barn. I put some hay in Lightning and Savannah's containers and then filled their troughs with water. (They actually let us bring our own, haha.) I let them eat, and then I tacked Lightning up for a couple practice runs. They were incredibly slow, but I didn't want to waste too much of his energy. I did one full speed run and brought him back into the stable. I braided his tail, being sure to leave five-inches of straight hair at the bottom. As soon as I finished the announcer called the barrel racers to the arena. I led Lightning to the arena in a fairly low amount of time.
As I entered the door and walked him down the dirt hall, I could already smell the other horses. I got to the gate, getting the number '157'. There were three people before me two behind me. They had very slow times their first run (28, 27 & 29) the second was even slower. When they called my name and I mounted my horse. The judge announced "Ready when you are." As I started off, the electronic eye beeped. I rounded the first barrel in a small amount of time and sped to the second. So far, I was doing great. Rounding the third barrel, Lightning done a little skid but we stayed up. We got back to the gate in a fairly small amount of time and the electronic eye beeped again as Lightning's back hooves crossed the line. The announcer said my score, but I was too busy hugging Lightning to pay any attention to what he said. After the other three went by, they had alright scores. Somewhere along the lines of 25 for all three of them.
After everyone finished, we all lined up in between the first and second barrels mounted on our horses. It was time to receive our rankings. The announcer walked away from his booth and stood in front of our line. “In third place, with a time of 24 seconds, is ....” The person that came in third rode over to the announcer and snatched her ribbon. My heart pounded, wondering if I would get second. “In second place, with a time of 23.231 seconds is ….” The second placer got their ribbon and got back into their place. I had lost all hope, almost positive that I wasn’t going to receive first place. “In first place, with a time of 23 seconds is (my name) and her horse, Electric Storm! I rode over and let him hand me my ribbon. He then pulled my arm over my head. I had to admit, if he could reach my arm when I was on my horse, he was pretty tall.
I rode my horse back to the barn and waited on my mom to get their. I sat on Lightning long enough for her to take a couple pictures. Then I took his saddle and bridle off and waited for them to announce breed. Although they had to reschedule it to a severe thunderstorm, that was the best day of my life. June 20th: The day I won my first horse show. |
