The Icelandic Laufskalaret Wild Horse Roundup
 By Winniefield Park   •   19th Jul 2020   •   181 views   •   0 comments

Summer has begun in the northern hemisphere and in Iceland, horses have been released to their summer pastures. In the autumn, before the hard Icelandic winter sets in, they will be herded up during an event known as Laufskálarét. Over 500 horses are gathered and penned and it’s a community event with families of owners participating, some of them for decades. The horses are identified, now by microchip, and sorted so they can be taken home by their owners and kept safe during the cold, snowy months when living free would be almost impossible.
