African Horse Sickness Outbreak
 By Winniefield Park   •   14th Jun 2020   •   121 views   •   0 comments

Over the past few decades, several different countries have had to deal with a deadly horse disease believed to have originated in Africa. Currently Thailand has been hit with the virus, called African Horse Sickness or AHSV. Experts believe it was carried through the country by zebras being transported to China. About 500 horses have died of the disease since February, one farm losing 18 horses in nine days. As the outbreak coincided with the Covid19 lockdown, experts are taking a close look at the spread of these types of diseases, and the impact on biosecurity. If there is anything to be thankful for itís that this particular disease is not zoonotic, meaning so far, there has not been any animal to human transmission.
