 By Winniefield Park   •   5th Oct 2019   •   1,454 views   •   0 comments

Sadly, some of the wild horses along the Outer Banks did not survive the storm as well as others. In what is being called a Ďmini-tsunamií its believed 28 wild horses were swept into the ocean during Hurricane Dorianís storm surge. These were members of a 49 horse herd living on Cedar Island in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina. Now, less than half the herd remains.

Deadly Tsunami of Horses In Outer Banks

Wild horses survive storms like Hurricane Dorian by staying on higher ground. Turning their haunches into the wind makes them more stable, and less affected by the wind. But, the horses were overwhelmed by the storm surge before they could reach a safe place to ride out the storm. Local residents and tour operators feel they have lost a part of their community.
