Horse Health Tracker

There are many equine health apps out there and it’s hard to choose one that will suit your particular situation. Horse Health Tracker from the folks at Equine Guelph is an app for Android or iPhone that helps you keep records of your horses’s health. The app is three tools: a body condition score generator, a record of a sixteen point health assessment and a body weight calculator. These three basic tools are free.
The first step is to enter your horse’s name, age and breed. Return to the home screen and then start the horse health check. This easily done, step-by-step process describes each checkpoint and gives you a go, caution and stop option for each. There are sixteen checkpoints to go through and any ‘caution’ or ‘stop’ entry should be discussed with a veterinarian.
The body weight calculator simplifies using the body weight formula heart girth x heart girth x body length)/330 = a very estimated body weight in pounds. However, to record the result you must enter it yourself in your horse’s ‘notes’. The app description says ”sync healthcare appointment reminders with your smart phone calendar”, but doesn’t mention which calendars it will integrate with.
The body condition score is calculated by checking six points on your horse. Each checkpoint is described, but to access the video demonstration you must purchase a subscription. This is the downside of the app. The videos and the ability to use and store information for more than one horse requires an in app purchase.
There are three license levels. The lowest allows you access the video content, record information for two horses, emailing information to your veterinarian, and record vet appointments, vaccination and worming dates and farrier visits. The second level license allows you to enter up to ten horses and the third level allows the tracking of up to fifty horses.
There is also a reminder feature but not in the free version. This is one of the weaknesses of this app. Although as the creators state, the proceeds from the app go to furthering welfare education programs at Equine Guelph, the pricing may dissuade exactly those people who could benefit from the information available. And, those with larger herds are unlikely to find it useful, relying more on their own judgement gained by experience than a ten dollar app. The rating for this app on Google Play is 3.4 out of 5 and most of the complaints are about the price and storing the information. If you’re looking for something very basic to help you get organized, this may work for you, especially if you upgrade to a paid version. Otherwise, you will probably find other apps that work as well or better.
Equestion is a free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android. Website: Horse Health Tracker |
