Equestrian Associations Around the World
|
|
Almost every country in the world has an governing body that oversees rules and regulations of horse competitions, specifically those sanctioned by the international body, Federation Equestre International or FEI. The United States Equestrian Federation was established in 1917 and while it’s name has undergone some changes, it is the national governing body for the eight official FEI sports and many others. Breed shows held by the Morgan, Arabian, Welsh and Friesian associations and many others must adhere to guidelines set out by USEF. There are also many sports governed by USET such as roadster, hunter, equitation and others. In the United States, horse owners and riders can turn to state horse councils and associations for guidelines and advocacy. These are good places to start when looking for riding lessons or information about horses in your state.

Canada
Equine Canada was called The Canadian Equestrian Federation. EC is the national governing body for FEI competition, coaching certification, competition and judging standards. It is also a connection between the Canadian government and the horse industry. It provides national dressage tests and regulations. In addition to the FEI sports, EC oversees Pony Club events, some breed competitions and some hunt seat shows. EC also takes on some responsibility for public relations between the horse industry and the public as well as breeders internationally. In addition to EC, each province has an equestrian federation that provides services such as insurance, advocacy and information for all horse owners.
Britain
The British Show Horse Association exists to improve the standards and qualities of horse shows and show horses. It started out as the British Show Hack and Cob Association in 1935 and its standards have been emulated around the world. It’s also the foundation of Pony Club rules and practices. BSHA sanctioned competitions for riding horses and line classes for breeding stock are held throughout the year. The Championships include the famous Horse of the Year Show held in Birmingham each October.
Australia
For a country to compete in Olympic Equestrian competition it must have an official governing body, and in 1948, the Equestrian Federation of Australia or as it was renamed in 2008, Equestrian Australia was formed to fulfill that requirement and ensure that Australian riders could participate on their own turf in the 1956 Summer Olympics. Since then, EA has been the governing body for FEI sanctioned sport and provides advocacy, education, public relations, and publicity for the horse industry in Australia. Each state also has their own branch that provides competition rules, education and training on a more local level.
Europe and Asia
Almost every European and Asian country has their equestrian association, especially if they have riders who compete at the international level. Many were formed solely for this purpose, and others function at a more local level, providing information, news, training and other services to the horse owning public. If you move to another country, these associations may be the first place to look for coaches and other services you may need as a horse owner or rider. If you plan to compete anywhere, these associations will be your line of contact to the FEI and provide you with the information needed to compete in international style competition. |
