Dream Holidays on Horseback

It seems like it's been winter for about ten years now. I'm trying to remember if I've stumbled through the back of a wardrobe and ended up in Narnia. Right now, a holiday on horseback in a warm place sounds just about right. I've been dreaming about the possibilities:

Take a Dip:
Many tropical resorts offer horseback tours that include a gallop along the beach. In Australia, you can ride along the coast for a few hours or a few days in the Great Ocean Road area. Alternatively, go on a trek in the Aotearoa region of New Zealand. If you want a bit more adventure, try a ride in Okavango Delta, Botswana, where you'll see crocodiles as you splash through canals.

Tour Wine Country:
There's more than one 'wine country' so you can take your pick. Some are surprisingly close to home. You need to look no further than California, Niagara Falls, or British Columbia. But, further afield, adventures await equestrian wine tasters in France, Italy and Chili just to name a few. Many of the trips feature gourmet food if wine isn't your thing.

Track the African elephant, zebra and other wildlife on horseback. Tours in countries, including Botswana, Mozambique, and Kenya offer opportunities to get eye-to-eye with lions, observe bathing elephants and ride side by side with zebras while observing amazing landscape and bird life. In India, ride the unique Marwari horse to see wildlife and historical sites.

Guest and Dude Ranches:
Want an 'old west' adventure? There are guest and dude ranches throughout North America that offer experiences for the beginner rider, to those who crave the adventure of a long cattle drive. In Australia, you can relive scenes from The Man From Snowy river, and stay at a working cattle station, where you'll muster cattle through the Snowy Mountain region. Or, travel to Ecuador or Argentina for a cattle drive and experience life on a working ranch.

Wilderness Tours:
Learn mountain horsemanship, veterinary care and packing in the High Sierras with a new program offered by UC Davis. Mountain trekking is also offered in most western states and provinces in North America. Switzerland is synonymous with mountainous terrain and there are many tours available that take hours or days to complete.

Discover Wild Horses:
There are populations of wild and feral horses the world over, and adventure holiday opportunities to observe and learn about these herds. In North America, you can take a three-day tour and earn academic credit while learning about the Mustangs living in the Pizona in Inyo National Forest, said to be North America’s wildest herds.

The horse is an integral part of life in Mongolia and there are many adventure tours to choose from to experience the horses and lifestye. Live with a nomadic Mongol family, ride through the Altai Mountains to observe native wildlife and meet the Kazakh, an ethnic group that hunts with Golden Eagles. And of course, observe the Tahki or Prezalski's Horse, the last true wild horse in its natural habitat.

In Australia, you might enjoy a brumby safari, camping in outback Northern Territory to observe these feral horses.

Learn to Ride:
Whether you are a beginner, or a much more experienced rider, there are a variety of options to learn to ride or improve your riding skills. Beginners will find programs in many locations, including Spain or the Levante hills of Mallorca. More advanced riders may travel to Ireland, where you can hone your cross country jumping skills or Portugal for dressage lessons on Lusitano horses from qualified and experienced instructors up to the Haute Ecole levels.

So, where would you pack your riding helmet to go?
