My Horse and Eight Others Die in Tragic Barn FireMy horse Phoenix was a barrel horse I got from Fallon Taylor. My story with my pride and joy came to a close on April 26, 2013. The day before was a beautiful day and it was warm enough that I didn't even have to wear a jacket. The sun was shinning strong and little did I know that was the last day I would ever see my beloved horse Phoenix. My last day with Phoenix was a typical and uneventful day. I did all the chores in the morning and then turned all the horses out except for Phoenix. I didn't want Phoenix in his pasture that afternoon due to some maintenance required on the fence.

I came back in the evening to do chores and help my younger nephew clean his ponies stall, then I helped him prepare for a show Saturday. It was going to be my nephews first time showing and we were both excited. After helping my nephew Phoenix was begging to have something done with him since he was still couped up in the barn. I lounged him around for a while and then turned him out in his pasture behind the barn that had the needed repairs completed. I then completed my chores and prepared Phoenix for the night in the stall. Before leaving I kissed him goodbye and told him good night, little did I know that goodbye was going to be the last.

I went to bed around midnight and shortly afterwards my Mom came rushing in to my room and told me the barn was on fire!

We rushed to the barn hoping it was not to bad, but when we drove closer we could see the black smoke and an orange glow in the distance. I didn't even need to see the barn to know he was gone. The fire department was not there yet and the arena and barn where Phoenix was located was completely covered in fire!

My Horse and Eight Others Die in Tragic Barn Fire

I cried the entire night and didn't leave the scene until the fire was out. None of the nine horses in the barn, including a 3 week old foal were saved. I miss Phoenix so bad. He was in top form and the prime of his life at five years old. He was my first horse and I had big plans to show him this year.

Phoenix will always be in my heart, we had a strong bond that continues to this day. Even though he is gone, I sometimes feel his presence. He really did live up to his name Phoenix Rising.

Thank you everyone it is the worst thing I could have ever thought would happen when I saw the fire and knew he was in there it hurt so bad all I could think about was how could he really be gone we were only together for a year and a half and I waited my whole life to finally get him only for him to be taken away from me. We were so close I could hardly go with out seeing at leat one feeding and the only time I missed those was that I was sick. I really don't know how I am getting by with it all but I am :(

Oh my I cannot imagine what you must be going through! I remember reading about when you first got Pheonix and thinking how great it was that you finally got the horse of your dreams and were so happy. I cry when I fine even a cut on my horse so I have no idea what I would do if I lost a horse in such a tragic way. You are in my thoughts ands I hope you don't give up on horses. Its amazing what horses can do to heal emotional wounds and help fill the hole in your broken heart.
