How to Convince Your Parents to Buy a Horse
|
|
Do you want a horse? If you're lucky, your parents will want you to have one too. However, there's a good chance they may feel quite opposite. Horses are big, expensive, require time and sweat labor to care for and for some people, scary. So the process of convincing your parents to buy you a horse may take some effort. Here are some hints to help.
Prove You Know Enough to Take of A Horse
If your parents see you making an effort to learn all you can about horse care, they're will feel more confident about entrusting you with one. Read books, take lessons, check out websites, watch DVDs, go to clinics, join clubs and ask lots of questions to learn all you can about properly caring for a horse.
Prove You Can Work Hard at Taking Care of a Horse, Schoolwork and Chores.
Your parents, and your teachers won't be impressed if you waste your time doodling in your notebooks, dreaming about horses and not getting school work done. It's miserable, but no matter how beautiful your drawings of horses in your geometry notebook are, you'll probably have to prove that you can keep your grades up.
Likewise, you'll need to keep on top of chores, even though cleaning cat boxes, taking out the trash and pooper-scooping the back yard are not as fun as stable cleaning and horseback riding.
Prove You Can Contribute To or Understand the Expense of Horse Ownership.
Horses are expensive. Even if you get a free horse, feed, farrier work, dental work, tack, board and all the other things that go into horse ownership costs money. Consider taking a part-time job, or finding some other way to earn money. Even if your contribution towards the cost of buying or caring for a horse is small, your parents will see that you are serious, and you understand the sacrifices it sometimes takes to own a horse.
Choose the Right Time to Ask
If one of your parents is just changing jobs, someone is sick or something like a wedding, moving an older brother or sister off to school or grandma into a smaller house is happening, it might not be the right time to ask for a horse. Getting a horse is a big decision and having too many big decisions to think about is wearing, even for an adult. You're more likely to get a yes, or at least a maybe, if things are quiet and your parents have some time to give your request some thought.
Prove You're in it for the Long Run
Sometimes parents say no to a request because as Dr. Phil says, "past behavior predicts future behavior." A horse is bigger than, and takes much more time and money to care for than most pets. If you've begged for another pet, and then after you got it the responsibility for caring for it was shifted over to another family member, your parents might rightly believe that this will happen again. This will make them very hesitant to buy you another animal.
If you've already got a pet, prove to your parents that you can be responsible for caring for it. Take your dog for a walk, refill its water bowl, clean your hamster, bird or guinea-pig cage regularly. This will show your parents that you have initiative and a responsible attitude.
There's often a very good reason why your parents won't let you have a horse. Understand that parents don't actually like saying no. And just because you don't get a horse now doesn't mean you'll never have one. Many people buy their first horse when they're much older. Somewhere down the road, despite what your parents say now, the dream of horse ownership can still come true. |

Nice article! I basically just committed myself fully to horses for 6 years. I gave up girl scouts so I could have another weekly lesson. As well as buying horse stuff for my birthday and Christmas. When I finally did get my horse, I only needed to buy food...XD

Dark Star
I got a free horse, and he has so far has held up pretty good (One thing about free horses, there is ALWAYS a catch) A dream horse on paper never has a free price tag if they are truly like that in real life.
Vet, Shows, Tack, Training, Farrier, etc....is very costly. Even for an easy keeper like my horse is. Not to mention boarding if you don't own land for a barn and pasture.
