Every now and then, horses show up in songs. Here are a few that have had some radio air-time over the years and have stood out in my mind.
Wild Horses
This song was originally written and preformed by the classic-rock band The Rolling Stones. Since it was released in the US in 1971, it has been covered by a very long list of music artists, including Susan Boyle the 2009 winner of the reality television show America's Got Talent.
“Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses we'll ride them someday...”
All the Pretty Little Horses
This is my favorite lullaby. It is thought to be of African-American origin, created by slaves who were forced to leave their babies because they had to care for their 'owners' babies. This lullaby has been recorded by many different music artists, including Odette and American folk singer Joan Baez. The song was also part of the soundtrack of the 2006 movie Flicka. It's one of my favorites, largely because I can play it (quite poorly) on the piano.
Hush-by, Don't you cry.
Go to sleep a little baby
When you wake you shall have cake and
all the pretty little horses.
Blacks and bays, dapples and grays
Coach and six a white horses.
Wild Fire
This silly, sappy song never fails to bring tears to my eyes when I hear it. It was first recorded by Michael Martin Murphy in 1975. I heard it on a country station recently, and there I was driving along the road sniffling away. Again.
She comes down from Yellow Mountain.
On a dark, flat land she rides.
On a pony she named Wildfire.
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night
A Horse With No Name – America
A Horse With No Name was recorded by the band America in 1972. The horse with no name is said to have been inspired by a print by Maurits Cornelis Escher, who is famous for his fantastical perspective bending artwork.
I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert, you can remember your name.
The Tennessee Stud
I remember when I was a kid, playing this song on a 45 record, over and over. The song is a ballad by folk musician Johnny Driftwood, and has been recorded by several country and folk artists since, including Eddy Arnold and Johnny Cash. In the song, the singer tells how he “had some trouble with my sweetheart's pa” and then has some misfortunes and adventures as he tries to put some distance between his outlaw future in-laws by riding and racing the Tennessee stud. However, it's a happily ever after ending with:
Pretty little baby on the cabin floor.
Little hoss colt playin' 'round the door.
I love the girl with golden hair.
And the Tennessee stud loves the Tennessee mare.
You've probably heard a 'horse song'. What favorite did I miss?
There's one I quite liked that I can't remember the name or the lyrics of right at this moment XD it was about a woman who escaped a drunkard husband and bought herself some land and a horse and rode the horse around free everywhere.
I've heard of three of those :)
