Everyone knows the main components of the safe rider consist of three main points:
1- The safe, schooled horse.
2- An in-depth knowledge of horsemanship.
3- A reliable helmet.
Many people do not consider the amount of safety a good helmet can add to your riding experience. Horses, no matter how well-trained, are herd animals. Their main line of defense, is therefore, flight. If you're caught on a spooking horse, you may very well get thrown or tossed around quite a bit. I've tried several helmets in my riding experience, be it on the trail, in the ring, or just riding for fun, I've found my current choice of helmet, a Troxel "Spirit" all-purpose riding helmet to be both comfortable and reliable.
I was recently in a bit of an accident with my horse, Marmalade. She is a very well-trained little pony, and is safe around tarps, streets, cars, and dogs. For some reason, she happened to spook at another horse in the ring and I was thrown from the saddle. I landed on my side and mid-back, and aside from being shaken and slightly bruised, was fine. If I had not been wearing a helmet, my injuries could have been much more severe, as a portion of the blow was taken by my riding helmet, a Troxel "Spirit" (picture one). I'm very grateful I was wearing a quality riding helmet when this event happened.
I find my helmet very comfortable and safe. I happen to like the "Spirit" because of its "breathable" design. It has holes in the top of the helmet to let fresh air in, and a lightweight, unnoticable inner padding/lining that adds to safety. Its all-purpose design is something I can work with to change my riding style, be it English or Western. More points I like about the "Spirit" is that it is avaliable in a rainbow of colors, has an adjustable dial-type band for the perfect fit, and has added sun protection with a flexible visor in the front.
For those that need a sturdy helmet for all diciplines, there are Troxel English helmets such as the "Victory" (picture two), trail-riding western helmets like the "Cheyenne" (picture three), or the all-purpose, stylish "Legacy" (picture four).
Furthermore, Troxel has an accident replacement policy in which the case of an accident where the helmet is damaged, Troxel will replace it for a fee within two years of its purchase date.
All of these reasons make me comfortable in choosing a Troxel helmet for my basic riding needs and wants.
I'm happy to say that after my fall from the saddle, I can still ride confidently with my Troxel helmet.
I highly reccommend going to www.troxelhelmets.com, a website all about this line of protective equestrian headgear. All of the images were from here as well. |

Oh my goodness. You beat me to this article. I must find something else I guess. But I 100% agree, they are great helmets.

I definately agree. I have had a troxel for 3 years, and it has protected me. Partially because I've never fallen off. XD

They are made to break after one accident. They are built to help absorb an impact and part of this involves it breaking to help do this. They are actually considered throw away items and should not be used after it has impacted the ground.

The Troxles also do not fit and they are lumpy and expensive.

Troxels are okay, they've helped me out quite a bit threw my bad accidents. But they do fit quite weird, and can be uncomfortable.

Personally, I think the safety factor makes up for the uncomfortableness of it. We can't have both safety and perfect fits, and everyone's head is different. (That sounds funny...but OK)

I've had Troxel Legacy for years and I love it. It is safe, lightweight and has many color options. Mine's Navy Antiquus. Next one I buy, I'd like to get the Cheyenne model. :D

Troxels don't fit my head. I got an IRH schooling helmet a while ago, and it fit right away. It's well-vented, stylish, and comfy. I use a troxel for showing. (The real velvet kind, none of that velveteen stuff.)

I currently own 2 spirit helmets and I'm glad to say that I love them. I own one for showing and another for schooling. I have tried many helmets but I like this one the most.
