One Summer Wasn't Long Enough

The summer of 2009. I will never forget that summer. That was the year that I first started taking riding lessons and it turned out to be the greatest days of my life so far. I learned so much and fell in love with the most amazing standardbred mare ever. Her name was Tally. She was about 15.3 hands. She previously raced from what I was told, but she didn't have the fiery Standardbred attitude. She was calm, sweet, gentle and loving. She was my baby.
Tally was the first horse I had ever ridden. Yeah, I have ridden those little ponies at the zoo, but who hasn't, and it wasn't like she was the first horse I had ever seen, since my grandparents race Standardbreds.
There was something about that summer that I will never forget. Maybe it was the thrill of just cantering through the grassy fields, or maybe playing tag with one of the other horses. It could have also been just being with horses. The most fun thing about that summer was the last time I rode, and that was at the horse show.
I had only been riding for two and a half months and I was going to a show. I was so tired at the show because the day before I spent about 4 hours cleaning tack, even tack I wasn't going to be using, but I was okay with that because I found it kind of fun. At the show I was entered into three events. The first was halter with Tally. At the beginning I had to get her to trot. That day she was being stubborn and refused no matter how hard I pulled her. So, halter wasn't starting off well. The last part was easy. I just needed to line up. As I was standing in the line the judge asked me if she had been raced because of her muscle definition. Since I didn't know at the time I told her I was unsure. When I was getting the flowers, blanket, carrot and lead I had won the judge told me the reason I won was because of her muscles. Everyone had told me not to expect to win and that I most likely wouldn't even place. I guess in halter even though Tally was being stubborn I proved that I could win no matter how unlikely it seemed.
Later I had walk, trot with my teachers favourite gelding, Rusty. I didn't do all that well because I had to be lead, only because Rusty was a little crazy that day and my teacher had sprained her ankle the day before. I was happy to at least win 5th and get a teddy bear and a carrot. I was hoping to win first because the person that one first won a bridle, saddle pad and a blanket, but I was still happy to have won what I did.
My last event I was so nervous for because I had to use Rusty again and it was walk, trot, canter and I had never canterd on Rusty before. Again we didn't do much trot and canter because of my teachers ankle, but I was so happy when I won 2nd and not 5th again. For second I won a bruching set, carrot and more flowers.
Every day I see the ribbons I won because I have them hanging over my bed. I will never forget the best summer of my life.

Have you had that feeling of pure helplessness? If you have you know that it's very unsettling. Well last weekend I had a horse show on a horse I had only ridden a few times. His name is Stink.
At the show I was scared because ...

It was a Wednesday, I think. The day my grandparents called telling me they had two more horses for me to fall in love with. My grandparents raced horses so they sometimes had new prospects around the farm. Buying the younger ones ...
