I Never Got To Say Goodbye To My Pony
|
|
I've had a rough week. This past Saturday the horse that taught me to ride had to be put down.
My first encounter with Snowball started at a small theraputic riding stable years before I started working there. A man donated this small white shetland pony to the program. Snowball had horrible ear fungus that was previously left untreated to the point no one could do anything about it. She was a sweet little pony that tried to please with all her heart, but also had the normal streak of pony attitude.
When I started working at the theraputic riding stable I was the smallest of the girls and the only one small enough to ride Snowball.
It was like having my own pony!
The other girls at the riding center had to share the horses they were riding, but I didn't. Snowball opposed trotting very strongly. She taught me to not be afraid of making a horse do what I wanted. She bucked when she didn't want to do something - being a pony her bucks were very little - and she tried to cut into the middle any chance she had.
Sadly I only had one year to ride her before I grew to large for her. Snowball was my favorite horse at the barn, even after I out grew her. No other girls small enough to ride her came after me. I still groomed her every chance I got and she trusted me so much she would let me touch her ears, even though it was painful for her.
Snowball was getting older, she had her own little padock and enjoyed being sort of the program mascot. Snowball and her buddy Molly would come to fundraisers to let little kids pet and groom them. Unfortunately, she foundered and could no longer be ridden. As time went on I went to public school and did not get to see her as often as I liked.
Many of the girls preferred to care for the horses that they could ride and Snowball dropped of the radar of favorite ponies at the barn. Any time I could get to the barn I would groom her and talk to her and let her know she was still loved. I eventually got my own horses and became more involved with them, not leaving much time for Snowball. Later I had a falling out with the program owner, along with some of the other girls, and never went back.
I was hoping to go back and see her this July, but now I will never see her again. Her foundered feet became so bad she could hardly walk and the barn owner made the decsion to put her down.
I never got to say goodbye.
I know she is in greener pastures, running freely on unfoundered hooves and her ears no longer filled with painful fungus. I miss her so much, even though I haven't seen her in years. She will always have an important place in my heart because she was the first horse who really taught me to ride.
Rest In Peace my Snowball darlin. I love you! |

I was ripped apart from my soul mate last fall. After I moved, the 'extras' money was tight, and my ($25 dollar, one hour weekly) lesson was the first thing to be cut out.
His name was Bear. An OTTB, originally from France, and had travled all over the world before landing in my barn, at the prime age of 13.
I loved him to PEICES. Still do, and I still cry when I think about him. He was my 4-H horse, and only real friend. I had just started a new school too, and that didn't help my stress levels. Dark bay... Oh gosh, I'm crying now...
Such a sweet heart, had the smoothest gaits ever...
Sorry. I have to stop.

Aww, I'm sorry. I've never had a horse of my own or even close to it, but I'm feel for you.

Just found out that a friend of mine who knew Snowball was probably going to be put down asked the barn owner to call me because she knew I was so attached to her....The barn owner chose not too..

Aww that is so sad... I'm sorry... My BFF RemRu could talk about how she lost her favorite horse all day long, so I truly know what it is like to lose a horse you love. She sounded like a great pony!

aww, I know how you feel, we had a horse who got grass sickness, I had been working with him for a few months and was really close with him but after a few tests they found he had grass sickness. He was only 18 months old. When it came for him to be put down he was at the equine hospital and my mum was at work so I couldn't get to him. I never got to say a proper goodbye.
I really do feel for you, it's such an awful thing to go through *hugs*
