Life On The Track - Part One

I trotted Fire in front of the people getting ready for the race to start, her ears flickered frequently and her Roman nostrils flared in excitment. I chatted with another girl who was next to me. Fire snorted and tossed her head, her coat gleaming and shining. It showed out, over every horse there. People stared at her gleaming coat and naturally long stride. They kept pointing and talking about her. I smiled brightly.
"Meghan!" I looked over at my mom, who was smiling, I stopped Fire and clicked my tounge. Fire trotted over to her, "Meghan, please be careful!" "Don't worry mom, I'll be fine!" People started lining up in the gates, "I gotta go." I cantered Fire towards the gates, her silky tail blowing behind her like a feather, her stride made her look like she floating. People gasped and stared, mouths hung open, I patted her silky neck.
I walked Fire in, she stayed calm, other horses reared and whinnied, kicking the gates. Fire watched the track. The bell rang and the doors lurched open. Everything went black and my eyes flew open. It was just a dream, even though it would be real in just two days. I jumped out of bed, excited for the day ahead. I brushed my natural platinum blond hair and straightened it, so it was easier to braid. My blue eyes twinkled happily. I quickly put on my barn clothes and walked to the kitchen humming quietly, running my fingers down the smooth wall. I twirled and said good-morning to my mom, grabbed a cinnamon roll and walked out the door to the barn.
I watched as the big, newly painted, white barn grew closer. I opened the doors and walked down the rows of sliding box stalls. I stopped at the 5th stall down and looked at the silver painted name plate that said Fire Comet with 'Fire' under it. I smiled and slid the door open. Fire nickered to me and I stroked her glossy head. "I'll be right back," I whispered and slipped out the door, Fire hung her head over the stall door and watched me.
Horses neighed and stomped their hooves impatiently for food, "Just be patient my little horsies." I teased. I mixed all the feeds and then went around, serving them out, along with a full bucket of cystal clear water for each of them. I made sure their hay nets were full then went back to Fire's stall.
I brushed out her already gleaming coat, making sure their was no dirt. Combed out her mane and tail softly, leaving no snarles left, than I braided the top of her tail, even though I didn't need to. Fire bobbed her head and lifted her hooves one by one when I tapped her just above the hoof itself. I was happy to only find a few pebbles, I picked them out and then patted her neck once more. She took a long drink of water then started eating. I walked out and shut the door, making sure it locked, as she somehow had got it to not lock fully if you didn't push it closed, hard enough. I smirked as I remembered that and pushed it until I could get the brass lock to stay. I ran back to the house, my hair was still in a perfect braid, as I had not much work to do.
"Get ready Meghan, we need to leave soon." I smiled and said "okay." as I walked along the bare wood floored hall, the coolness of it gave me chills. I got to my room and went to my dresser, changing into my racing clothes and than walked back out.
My mom looked at my black with yellow stripes on the sleeves, racing jacket. My new, white racing jodphurs and my old racing boots that were wearing out. "Meghan, I thought you would need these. She handed me a white box with the name Carnillian's Shop in cursive brown letters. "Mom! NO way!" I flung open the top, throwing it behind me. She laughed as I held the best racing boots there was in the whole nation.
I put them on, their glossing black leather brand new, and looked as if they were just made. "How-" she cut me off, "Don't you need to go get Fire in the trailer?" "Yes!" I ran out the door to the barn, jumping over small puddles of murky water in the grass. I went to Fire's stall and put on her protective tail and leg wraps for the trailer ride. I grabbed the rest of my racing gear and her tack and put it in the trailer, running back to get Fire. I led her, walking, to the trailer and loaded her in our silver and black trailer. My mom walked out and got in the driver's seat. I got in the passenger seat and bounced up and down, my mom said meanly an in a sarcastic way, "Stop acting like a 3 year old and bouncing on the seat. You're 18, almost 19." We both laughed.
After a hour or so we drove up to the giant Belomont Stakes racing track, "Here we go!" I said high-pitched, bouncing on my seat again, my mom glared teasingly and I held my eyes wide and stopped, shrinking back in the corner, playing along, we both laughed again and then drove up to the gate and signed in.
My mom parked and I got Fire while she got my stuff and Fire's tack. I led her to the 50 stall barn to the stall marked #17. Her name was on the stall door on a plate that was removable from the dark brown mahogany wood doors. Fire nickered as a stable boy fed her and the automatic water gushed into the white bowl on the wall. Fire ate slowly and my mom came out of the tack room, "I put everything away, even your protective racing helmet and goggles, you know."
"Thank's mom," I smiled. She smiled back. "I'll wait until I'm sure Fire is settled in then we can go to out hotel," I said.
I didn't know why I had gotten myself and Fire ready, as the race was tomorrow, just what I always do I thought. My mother smiled and said, "I'm going to go look around, text me when we you are ready and we can go."
"Ok, I will." I said and smiled, I stroked Fire's red and white face, "Did you know your stripe is really wide, Fire?" Fire shook her head up and down and snorted, I laughed and patted her strong, sleek neck that was arched over the stall door. I sighed and she nudged my shoulder affectionatly. I smiled and said softly, "I'll see you tomorrow, Fire," Fire nickered and cranned her head watching me walk out of the barn.
I texted my my mom and we were soon driving to out hotel. |
