I've been obsessed with horses all my life, but only from age 8 was i given the chance to actually ride. I live in a remote village in North Devon, UK where there is no riding stable within walking distance, so i couldnt go to one often.
It all started when a new girl moved to the village and got a horse. The horse was a beautiful 14.2hh dapple and flee bitten grey mare called Breeze, or Meneth Jasmine Breeze. One day before I knew her name or who she belonged to I was standing at the edge of her field admiring her. I called out random names such as 'Storm' or 'Cloudy' to try and get the right one and get her to come over, but with no luck. Her owners Grandparents turned up at the field and invited me to watch her getting new shoes later that day, I couldn't wait. I went down that day and watched her get her new shoes, and met her owner, 13 yr old Kate. After that, I went down every now and again to help Kate and her friend Danielle look after their horses. Soon my mum realised how devoted to horses I was, and offered to pay Kate £30 a month to teach me stable management and how to ride. I learned most the things I know now from these lessons. I even spent time out in the yard on freezing winter nights making songs up to help me remember the parts of the horse. I can remember one time, at a show with Kate and Breeze, I walked breeze over a jump grinning from ear to ear. I also rode one of kate's friends horses in a family pony show where I got forth.
Dashai from morgan (Sophie) was my best friend at the time, and still is. she came down to see breeze with me, and i have a pretty horrible picture of both of our first jumps. After a while I rode Nugget(Danielles old load pony) for a while, And also went to a riding stables with Dashai, called Tin Park. Kate sold breeze, and shortly after a new person joined our school. I found out pretty soon she had 3 horses, and she pretty quickly discovered how much i loved horses. They asked me if i would like to ride their oversized 12hh welsh gelding, Loui. That was an amazing couple of months. I learned how to canter, rode on the beach, and had so much fun. One day, we where about to ride to the beach when i noticed Loui was lame. we put him back in his stall and left him for box rest. Amelias mum decided to look after him herself instead of calling the vets. He kept getting worse and worse, and by the time they called the vet it was too late. He had eat something that had acted toxic in his body and started to push his cannon bone down through his hoof and it resulted in having him put down.
After that incident I rarely rode, If I did it was on Amelias Dartmoor pony, Euro, of which I did my first proper show on. We came second in handsomest gelding, behind this STUNNING dell pony. I was so happy. Every now and again I would get on a friends horse and for a little while I was a helping hand at an eventers yard where I rode Otis, a 18hh gelding. Last year I met Tyler, and for a while I rode her horse, Jess. That was some fun times. I had my first fall with him. Me and Tyler swapped horses and i didnt get a chance to sort both stirrups out before a car came around the corner and the horse trotted off. Then Tylers other pony Kizzy died, and Jess was calling for her so bad she had to be moved. For a little while I rode Tylers third pony Guto with her, but not often.
In November I was offered the Chance to ride my current mount, Oliver. Me and Olly have come on in leaps and bounds, and He's a very special horse to me. He use to be fairly naughty, but now he's a docile gelding who happily ambles along with perfect breaks. Thinking over it now, I realised how much every single horse in my life helped me get to where I am now, a 13yr old confident rider. I might not be the best rider, but my life would have been soo different if I hadn't gone down and watched Breeze get shooed, If Amelia had chosen to join a different school, etc. I am going to treasure every single horse which comes into my life from now on, and treat them as the amazing animals they are.
