This is the last part of my series on Horse Related Mythical Creatures, and I will be looking at Pegasus.
Pegasus was a white, flying horse that, like the centaurs, came form Greek mythology. He is the only recorded flying horse, and he plays a bit part in the life of Belleropon. Pegasus was created when Perseus killed a Gorgon (a woman with snakes for her hair). He sprang, fully grown, from the blood of the Gorgon when she died. There a two different versions of what happened next. The most common one is that Pegasus flew to Mount Helicon, and struck the ground with his hoof. When he did this, he created the spring of Hipporene. Hipporene means ‘The Horse’s Fountain’.
Then a warrior called Bellerophon had a vision in which a goddess told him to go and capture Pegasus. When he woke up, a golden bridle was lying beside him. Then he went to a spring in Corinth, and waited for Pegasus to appear. When Pegasus landed, Bellerophon threw the bridle over Pegasus’ head, and this made him tame and allowed Bellerophon to mount. Then they flew to the Chimaera, which was a large, fire breathing monster, and killed it.
Pegasus and Bellerophon went on to slay many other enemies, and soon Bellerophon was favoured by the Gods and made heir to the throne. However, Bellerophon thought he deserved to be a god, and he flew up to Mount Olympus on Pegasus. But this did not please Zeus, who was chief of the gods. Zeus then sent an insect to bite Pegasus, and Pegasus reared. Bellerphon then fell to the ground, and wandered the Earth alone for the rest of his life.
Then Pegasus was awarded a place in Zeus’ stables, and carried his thunderbolts. Later, Pegasus was placed in the sky as a constellation, as a reward.
Pegasus can be found in art and poetry. You probably know that Pegasus was in Disney’s movie ‘Hercules’, although in Greek mythology it never says that Pegasus ever meets Hercules. If you have read my article on Centaurs, you will know that Hercules did meet centaurs, however.

Horse Related Mythical Creatures - Centaurs6 641 views
Centaurs are mythical creatures. It’s head, arms and chest are from a human, and yet the rest of the body is a horse, including all four legs and tail. There are not just horse-centaurs, there are dog-centaurs and deer-centaurs too! The exact time centaurs were ‘thought up’ can’t really be said, as people would have heard tales
