For those of you who have never heard of the Skyros pony, I would like to share this historic breed with you.
The semi-feral Skyros pony hails from the tiny Greek island of the same name. There are records showing that the ponies have been on the island for well over 1000 years. It is a very small equine, generally standing between 9 and 11 hands high. Skyros ponies may be bay, brown, grey or palomino. Since the cream gene exists in the breed, it may be safe to assume that buckskin is possible in the herds.
At one time, the Skros was popular for farm work but today can be seen as a pack pony, threshing grain, working in harness and even under saddle. They are said to make decent jumpers for their small size. They are also used for breeding mules and hinnies.
The Skyros is a very rare breed and no breed Registry or Stud Book currently exists, however, a Greek charity organization known as the Silva Project is working to re-establish the breed in its homeland. At the last count in 2001, there were less than 100 mares and about 50 stallions, all of which may or may not have been purebred, left on the island.
