Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia   29th Jul 2010
Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia
General I decided to write an article on my experience while volunteering at the RDA and I hope you like it. Just a few weeks ago I was given a special chance to volunteer at the RDA Australia (Riding for the disabled association of Australia Limited) for a school assignment. The first day I was there a lady gave me an introduction around the place. I was also able to lead a chestnut horse named Ollie around while she rode him to see what he was like. He was there on trial because he was new to the RDA. Then it was decided I would come back a week later on the next Wednesday to continue my volunteering.
that is soo awesome, I live in AU and would love to help out there! it is soo amazing to see how horses can really transform lives!

Are-You-Getting-the-Ponybox-Newsletter&id=1114 Ponybox News  Ponybox recently released a new equestrian website and if you don't get the Ponybox Newsletter you probably didn't hear about it. The new website is in its initial test phase and will be advertised here on Ponybox once we have most the issues worked out.

If you get the Ponybox newsletter you also received a few emails on the background of Ponybox LLC and how you can start your own equestrian website. I was extremely surprised with the amount of feedback I received on getting started with your own websites and have been helping a lot of you with questions over the past few months. In my newsletters I also touch on the expenses of running Ponybox and was amazed at how many of you assumed the costs were very small to keep this site running. If you get the newsletter you know exactly how much we pay per month to keep this going, and you also found out how I never have taken one penny of the donations for myself. To this day all donations have gone back into the company to help it grow.

Intelligent Stirrups

Intelligent-Stirrups&id=1042 Product Reviews  Losing a stirrup anywhere, a lesson, horse show, or even on a trail ride can diminish your concentration which could lead in loss of control, balance, etc and result in a fall. When you lose a stirrup it is positioned flat against the horse’s side it closes against the rider’s foot and catches the falling rider. When you lose a stirrup you obviously want to get it back quick and efficiently so, what happens when you can’t?

While shopping in my local tack store I came across a fancy invention entitled “MDC Intelligent Stirrup”. At first glance this stirrup looks like any old stirrup seen on saddles across the world. So why is this stirrup come with a $169-204 price tag?

Careers with Horses – The Riding Instructor

Careers-with-Horses--The-Riding-Instructor&id=1105 General  Most riders have a teacher – someone they trust to help them improve their skills, their confidence, and their knowledge. A good riding instructor is perhaps the most important part of learning to ride – not that there aren’t plenty of excellent self taught riders out there – but an instructor will help you progress faster, and will help you do it safely. Good instructors can become great friends too, there for you when you win your first trophy, when you have your first fall, and maybe even when you buy your first horse of your own. Good instructors get remembered forever – I certainly remember my best teachers, even though I haven’t seen some of them for thirty years. If you want to be that person for other riders (and get paid for it!) how do you go about becoming an instructor? And more importantly, how can you learn to be a good instructor?

The-Horses-in-My-Life&id=1011 Horse Stories  I've been obsessed with horses all my life, but only from age 8 was i given the chance to actually ride. I live in a remote village in North Devon, UK where there is no riding stable within walking distance, so i couldnt go to one often.

It all started when a new girl moved to the village and got a horse. The horse was a beautiful 14.2hh dapple and flee bitten grey mare called Breeze, or Meneth Jasmine Breeze. One day before I knew her name or who she belonged to I was standing at the edge of her field admiring her. I called out random names such as 'Storm' or 'Cloudy' to try and get the right one and get her to come over, but with no luck

Shows and Events So this past weekend, I went to a horse show in Milwaukee, WI. I got there on Friday to watch my friend, Emily, show her horses. First, she showed her horse Willie in Three Gaited Country Pleasure. They did really well and got 5th. Next, she showed Carl, her other horse. He is 5 gaited. Oh, and Willie and Carl are both Saddlebreds. So my friend and Carl had an awesome ride. They got 3rd out of 5, I think. But anyways, both of her rides were awesome!

Caba-and-Her-Story-of-Abuse&id=1078 Horse Stories  This is the story of my horse Caba. One day me and my dad were driving home from my last home-schooling class and we saw a man abusing his horse. She was a lovley, wilted haflinger and you could see the sorrow in her eyes. It made my heart hurt so much. My dad being the cowboy that he is, stopped the car and called animal rescue. Animal Rescue arrived in about 20 minutes. When they got their my dad and I found out it wasn't the first time this guy had abused animals. They took the guy down to the jail house a few hours away, and me, my dad and the animal rescue people were left to tend to the horse.

My Show Horse Reddie My Show Horse Reddie
Shows and Events Me and my horse Reddie. We make a team. We work together to acheive one goal, to win. And win we did. My most recent showing adventure, my trainer was unaviable. My grandparents had come for the first time to watch me show. And me and my horse Reddie did very well.

Before I tell you my results, you should know a bit about my Reddie boy. So he is a gelding, out of HH Red Rock, Quarter horse. He has a crooked leg, but it does not hinder his performance. He has had a rough life, as far as we know. He has some serious 'problems' that we have been working through. Such as, he bolts when he gets scared, he gets scared at the simplest things(Including ribbons, but he has gotten better at that), and he has a problem with horses coming at him from the oppisite way.

Alpha Equine Breeding Facility   22nd Jul 2010
Alpha Equine Breeding Facility
General Last week I had the opportunity to visit the top-notch breeding center where my instructor’s daughter works and I was amazed with what I saw and learned during our tour.

Alpha Equine, located in Granbury, Texas is the home to nine champion cutting horse stallions. These nine stallions each have their own individual paddocks and roomy air-conditioned stalls 24/7 and I must say there are treated better than most humans.

During Breeding Season, mares from all over the world are brought to Alpha Equine to be bred with these cutting studs. Even though the stallions are champions at what they do, most of their foals are successful in other sports such as reining, barrel racing, roping, and some even become racehorses! (Yes, there are races for Quarter Horses out there). Occasionally one of the foals will even grow up to be a show jumper!

Horse Racing Isn't Evil or Cruel

Horse-Racing-Isnt-Evil-or-Cruel&id=1085 General  This is going to make a lot of people mad, but horse racing isn't cruel. I have met many racehorses, a man named Mark who works at a bank with my grandpa races Thoroughbreds at a local track, and the horses at his farm are very happy. They enjoy racing each other in the paddock, and lazing around in their stall. I love watching them exercise in the big field, galloping at full speed all alone, or with another horse. At that farm, they tend to take four horses out in a 16 acre clear, flat field and work them. It's fun to watch them do little match races to get them used to galloping against other horses and it's just fun to watch them exercise.

Horse Related Mythical Creatures - Pegasus

Horse-Related-Mythical-Creatures--Pegasus&id=1068 Horse Stories  This is the last part of my series on Horse Related Mythical Creatures, and I will be looking at Pegasus.

Pegasus was a white, flying horse that, like the centaurs, came form Greek mythology. He is the only recorded flying horse, and he plays a bit part in the life of Belleropon. Pegasus was created when Perseus killed a Gorgon (a woman with snakes for her hair). He sprang, fully grown, from the blood of the Gorgon when she died. There a two different versions of what happened next. The most common one is that Pegasus flew to Mount Helicon, and struck the ground with his hoof. When he did this, he created the spring of Hipporene. Hipporene means ‘The Horse’s Fountain’.

An Amazing Story from America’s History

-An-Amazing-Story-from-Americas-History&id=1072 Horse Stories  American Saddlebreds are an amazing breed, and they have a rich heritage grown out of America’s southern states. Their history is one of southern elegance and determination, and although they may not have made their mark outside of America yet, pretty much every horse lover would know one if they saw one – you just can’t miss that high stepping gait. That southern heritage has a surprising twist though – did you know that one of the greatest Saddlebred trainers and breeders – and one of the founding fathers of the American Saddlebred, was actually a black man, and the son of a slave?

Tom bass is the commonly called the ‘King of the Saddle Horse’. Born sometime on the 1850s – no one knows exactly when – to a slave girl and a white man on the Bass Plantation in Missouri, Tom was born into a time when slavery was still in practice in America, although the divisions between south and north were already beginning. Tom’s father was the son of the plantation owner, Eli Bass, who had a real passion for horses. This was good news for Tom, because it meant that he had plenty of opportunities to work with some of the best gaited horses in America.

The Bitless Bridle

The-Bitless-Bridle&id=1009 General  Everyone here rides with a bit, we use it to turn, stop and control our horses. In the equine industry their is a myriad of bits to choose from. One of the problems is that we have to go through the trouble of finding the best bit for your horse. You must make sure the horse is comfortable and its not hurting the horses mouth, Which is the most sensitive part on the horses body.

Some people don't take the time to properly fit a bit. They buy a bit and put the steel in the horses mouth, not caring how it feels to the horse, and much too worried how it looks. If it is wrong in the mouth, it causes the horse pain, which then turns into fear and resistance against the rider and cause all kinds of problems. Horses are unhappy, riders are unhappy and everything shatters.

Shows and Events This is the annual summer show that is made for west Wiltshire to battle out out to find out who are the best riders in showing.

Me and My sister attended this show for the second year running, looking forward to it as much as I hated showing. Though on the other hand, Paige, my younger sister loves this sort of thing. For me it's jumping, jumping, jumping and oh, more jumping. As she likes the dressage and little local showy shows.

It wasn't an overly early start waking at 7:30am. I searched around my room for the Shirt and tie, Wearing a tie for the first time in around three years. I prefer my stock personally, as I cannot do a tie xD. Yes, Girleh fails at that.

We reached the show around 8:30am. I gave my dear pony a brush over before I began to tack him up, I winced at the rain, though refused to let our typical British weather hold me back.

It also means I have more time to sit down and piece together part two of a series that I should have updated ages ago.

Kissing Spine – Could This be Troubling Your Horse?
by mosquito on 18th Jul 2010

Kissing-Spine--Could-This-be-Troubling-Your-Horse&id=1071 Care and Grooming  Back problems are often one of the most common causes of poor performance and disobedience in horses, yet all too often they go undiagnosed and untreated. Kissing spine sounds weird, but it’s one of the more common conditions that can cause an otherwise great horse to turn uncooperative or start bucking and resisting training. So what is it, how can you recognize it, and if your horse has it, what can you do?

Kissing spine – also called dorsal spinous process impingment or Basstrup’s disease – occurs when the bony ‘spikes’ at the top of the horse’s vertebrae start to rub together, causing pain and swelling, especially on moving. The vertebrae involved are most often the ones at the back of the ‘thorax’ – these are the ones that have the ribs attached, so in other words, the ones under the saddle!
